New Solar Energy Storage Subsidy Policy in Poland
According to data from the International Energy Agency, Poland's photovoltaic (PV) and heat pump markets are among the fastest-growing in the EU. In 2023, Poland's installed capacity reached 4.6 GW, and by the end of 2023, the cumulative installed PV capacity had reached 17.05 GW, making it the fourth largest PV market in the EU after Germany, Spain, and Italy.
However, fossil fuels still dominate Poland's energy mix, and Poland remains the EU country with the highest per capita carbon dioxide emissions.
In early 2024, Polish Secretary of State Urszula Zielińska announced that the government is considering setting a date for the final phase-out of coal, as coal-based power generation is economically unfeasible and threatens energy security. Therefore, a total subsidy of up to 400 million PLN is being offered for solar battery storage and hot water storage systems
Subsidy Amounts:
- PV Systems without Storage: The maximum subsidy available is 6000 PLN.
- PV Systems with Storage: The maximum subsidy is increased to 7000 PLN.
- Hot Water Storage Systems: Subsidies can reach up to 5000 PLN, with a minimum hot water storage capacity of 20 liters.
- Battery Storage Systems: Subsidies can reach up to 16,000 PLN, with a minimum battery capacity of 2 kWh.
The total budget for this program is 400 million PLN. The deadline for applications is December 20, 2024, or until funds are exhausted.
Eligibility Criteria:
Applicable to net-metering users who installed their systems after January 1, 2021.
- The PV system must have a capacity between 2 and 10 kW.
- Users who installed their systems before July 31, 2024, are eligible for funding without needing to install storage systems or hot water storage systems.
- Users who install systems after July 31, 2024, must include storage systems or hot water storage systems to qualify for funding.
All eligible residential PV storage systems must be grid-connected and report the stored energy to the local operator to receive the subsidy. Off-grid installations are not eligible for subsidies.
